Organisational Learning Method – Space for Sharing

Watch video

Space for sharing refers to both formal and informal platforms that are used by staff to share, discuss and learn about work-related matters.  These platforms may be fixed or fluid.  Fixed platforms include the office pantry, meeting room, water cooler, toolbox meeting, staff corner, communication noticeboard and even online spaces such as Whatsapp groups.  Learning about work may also happen at fluid platforms such as handover sessions, lunches or break-times.  Interaction in the space is work-related and allows active participation by all staff.  The ‘owner’ of the space ensures that information shared in the space is correct and updated.

  1. Identify an existing space for sharing
  2. Identify the owner(s) of the space
  3. Set a purpose to create a meaningful space for sharing
  4. Identify the roles and responsibilities of the owner(s) of the space
  5. Provide resources to create and maintain a meaningful space
  6. Use the space for sharing
  7. Engage staff to participate in the space for sharing

  1. Organisation / management
    • Trust the ‘owner(s)’ and staff in using the space to share and learn work-related matters
    • Provide support and resources to the ‘owner(s)’ to create and maintain a meaningful space
    • Build an environment that is open and safe for sharing
  2. Workplace ‘trainer’
    • Ensure that the space is used to share work-related matters
    • Keep the sharing relevant and just in time for the staff
    • Engage staff in the sharing and keep it fun
    Workplace ‘learner’
    • Participate in the sharing actively
    • Keep a positive and open mind to listen to different views
    • Provide suggestions in the use of sharing space
